I've made this page to help spread around some information about Linux.  Most everyone has heard about Linux.  Not too many people really know what it is, and even fewer people have tried it.

Linux is an Operating System for your computer.  It is something that replaces Microsoft Windows or the Macintosh OS.  The biggest difference between Linux and the other operating systems out there is that Linux is based on Open-Source code.  This means that it is released under the General Public license and can be downloaded by anyone in the world and used for FREE.  It isn't MS Windows so you will have to learn how to use it, but it is definitely well worth it, and it isn't as hard as you might think.

Most new distributions make it very easy to install and use Linux.  Even if you are new to the Linux world you should be able to easily install and operate all of the basic functions within Linux (Web surfing, email, word processing, etc...).  Mandrake and Red Hat are two distributions that make things very very simple.  Just pop in the installation CD-ROM and follow the easy to understand directions and in less then 30 minutes (sometimes only 10-15 minutes; Windows usually takes around an hour), you can be surfing the internet or checking your email with ease.

Linux Commands
Reference Card
If you are either new to Linux or just have a bad memory then it might be a good idea to download and print out this nifty little reference card of various Linux commands.  Many users probably won't even need to use the command line.  If you just want a computer to surf the internet or to do email on then this won't mean much to you.  If, on the other hand, you plan on digging into the guts of the OS and really making it work for you then click on the following link:

Right-Click here and choose "Save Target As..."
or "Save Link As..." to download the card (PDF Format)

Linux Distro Links
Ubuntu
Ubuntu is currently what I would call the king of Linux.  It is super easy to install and use.  From their website you can order some CD's for free or you can download and create a CD yourself.  As with most of the distro's listed here, Ubuntu comes preloaded with lots of great software and games.  This is definitely worth a look.

A great resource for downloading different Linux distributions.  Updates regularly.
Mandriva Linux
Mandriva used to be Mandrake Linux.  They have recently acquired another of my favorite distros called Lycoris.  A pretty good linux distro.  One of the faster and more bleeding edge distros.

The home of the Red Hat Linux distribution.  This is currently one of the biggest linux providers.  Their free (non-enterprise) distro is called Fedora Core (see link below).
Fedora Core
Fedora Core is the free/personal version of Red Hat linux.  In my opinion it is one of the best Linux distros out there.
Linspire Linux
Another Linux distro that tries to make switching from MS Windows a little easier.  A pretty good OS but this one is not downloadable.  You have to buy one of their packs to install this one.
A while back they had to change their name to Linspire because the name Lindows didn't sit well with Microsoft.  Their free version is called Freespire (see link below).
OpenSUSE
OpenSUSE is the free version of the SUSE Linux project.  SUSE Linux was bought out by Novell a little while ago and since then has become an enterprise-centric distro.  OpenSUSE gets a lot of its goods from the main SUSE program but is community driven and free.

Knoppix is a version of Linux that runs entirely off of a CD.  This is a great way to try out Linux without having to install anything or mess up your current system.  If you are new to Linux then you might want to download Knoppix and give it a try.  If you want to install lots of programs and really play around with Linux though, I would recommend getting one of the other distributions.  This one is meant more for demonstrations, troubleshooting, etc...
